DESCRIPTION
The School of Art + Art History in the College of the Arts seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Design to bring their situated knowledge to its Design and Visual Communications (MFA) and Graphic Design (BFA) programs. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in teaching and research at the intersections of computing, AI, and design. UF’s ongoing AI initiative seeks to make UF a national leader in this technology, and this faculty member will take the lead in establishing design and visual communication’s participation within this flourishing research community. The School of Art + Art History strategically approaches AI as an infrastructure that can either compromise or foster pluriversality, depending on its design. As a vital participant in the collaborative, future-facing Design & Visual Communications faculty, this new colleague will bring a commitment to co-design and pluriversality to their research, teaching, and service in the School of Art + Art History.

Responsibilities
- Develop and/or maintain an active national and/or international creative, scholarly, and/or professional praxis profile, in areas of specialization related to Artificial Intelligence and Design. Candidates may specialize in one or more specific Design sub-fields and can make this distinction clear in their application materials.
- Develop, revise, and deliver undergraduate and graduate curricula, particularly in Artificial Intelligence and Design.
- Participate in our learning community actively, finding innovative ways to connect design to critical discourse in other disciplines.
- Participate in shared governance through service to the School, College, and University.
EXPECTED SALARY
$73,000 – $92,600, depending on the candidate’s experience and academic rank, with a comprehensive and highly competitive leave and benefits package.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate must meet all of the following:
- Terminal degree (e.g. MFA, PhD) or ABD in Design, Architecture, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Studies, Media Studies, Digital Media, Science & Technology Studies, or related field.
- Record of research in Design and Artificial Intelligence with evidence of emerging or established recognition in the field, commensurate with rank and experience.
- Evidence of skill in designing and facilitating academic work that advances curiosity, inclusion, open intellectual discourse, and the well-being of all in an environment of complex diversities.
- Evidence of successful collaboration and collegiality with faculty, students, and staff.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will meet some of the following:
- Evidence of creative, interdisciplinary work at the intersections of computing and design.
- Creative coding and/or other computer programming skills, demonstrated for example by open-source projects, code repositories, and/or hardware and software skills.
- Experience of designing design tools (metadesign), for example, designing simple structures for complex, emergent, conditional, computational, parametric, and/or generative designs.
- Experience of community-based projects that connect academic research with public interest, for example co-design and/or participatory design projects.
- Evidence of success in acquiring internal and/or external funding in support of creative and/or scholarly research.
- Evidence of a commitment to innovative and cross-disciplinary curricula.
- Teaching experience at the university level.
- Demonstrated aptitude for working toward structural and strategic change, particularly in relationship to pluriversality.
