Mission Statement

Meaningful design, sensory perception, experimentation and collaboration with the business community are some of the words that characterise Design School Kolding. The programme is an international talent workshop for Danish design. We work at eye level, believe in equality and respect diversity. Design School Kolding develops and cherishes talent, and challenge it by teaching students to reflect on their own process and how to cooperate through projects drawn from a specific user context – often in collaboration with the business community. Design School Kolding builds on the tradition of Danish design, placing focus on design which is meaningful. We believe that innovation comes from relating to history and tradition. The school’s approach is not to provide the answer, but to find the answer together. On the programme, we work with tools, techniques, concepts and methods. We encourage talented students and believe in professional cooperation between individuals. We build on knowledge and research and place emphasis on sensory perception and experimentation – a union of hand and spirit, head and hands. Design School Kolding has university status and provides a framework for a number of recognised researchers in a young field of research as well as an increasing output of PhD projects. At the same time, we know the importance of putting design into practice and therefore prioritise good workshop facilities where students can work with their material 1:1. It is important to the school that its in-house teachers practice what they teach and make use of a large number of guest teachers to ensure inspiration from professional practice. Design School Kolding is an independent institution under the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science. The school trains designers at undergraduate and graduate level. Design School Kolding has just short of 350 active students and a number of PhD students, including industrial PhD students. Every year, the school admits around 70 new students on BA and 60 new students on MA level. In addition, the school offers a Master’s programme in design management in collaboration with the University of Southern Denmark.

Research Activity and Main Areas

Design School Kolding strives to be a leader within design research in Denmark. The school has been accredited since 2010 and therefore conducts research at the highest level with special focus on the values of sustainability, social inclusion, play and cultural diversity. It is important to the school that the research contributes to its teaching – and vice versa. The 3 LABS are responsible for ensuring the proper integration of research into the day-to-day teaching. Research at Design School Kolding must challenge and develop traditional design assumptions. The research is therefore often conducted in close cooperation with the business community and the cultural scene, and also often involves designers and researchers from other institutions, both nationally and internationally. Research at Design School Kolding thus contributes to a better understanding of the important role design plays in the development of a society’s innovative dynamics. The school’s research supports the development of concepts and methods in design-led innovation processes in both the business community and the cultural scene, as well as in the public sector. The research is also important in the continuous changes to the knowledge base of design programmes. Design School’s research efforts are centred on the three strategic research areas: • social innovation • sustainability • play.

Doctorate Level Programs

PH.D. studies are planned individually – all within our three strategic areas: Social innovation, sustainability and play.
