Mission Statement

The Department of Architecture (DIARC) engages in teaching and research across the fields of design, history, and urban studies, addressing these domains in their multiple and interconnected dimensions. DIARC functions as a center of excellence and as a structured educational and training environment for the development of methodologies, theories, and practices in design and research.

The Department’s academic mission is grounded in an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to knowledge, spanning history, drawing, technology, and urban planning, and encompassing scientific, professional, and cultural perspectives. This holistic framework supports both academic excellence and societal relevance in education and research.

International Role

The Department of Architecture (DIARC) at the University of Naples Federico II has established a wide network of international partner institutions, both within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme and through bilateral agreements.

With specific reference to the field of design, our partners include: École de Design Nantes Atlantique, École Supérieure d’Architecture et Design de Saint-Étienne, and Université Paris 8 (France); Köln International School of Design, TH Köln (Germany); BAU College of Arts and Design Barcelona and IED Barcelona and Madrid (Spain); Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano, Bogotá (Colombia); and Universidad UTE, Quito (Ecuador).

Moreover, many additional collaborations take place within the framework of the Aurora European University Alliance, of which the University of Naples Federico II is a full member. Particularly significant are the joint teaching activities in the fields of Social Entrepreneurship and Design for Social Innovation, currently ongoing with the University of Iceland, Copenhagen Business School (CBS), and Université Paris-Est Créteil.

National Role

The Department of Architecture (DIARC) at the University of Naples Federico II has been selected as one of the 180 Departments of Excellence at the national level for the five-year period 2023–2027. This prestigious recognition, established by national legislation, is awarded to departments that distinguish themselves through the excellence of their scientific research, the quality of their strategic planning, and their capacity for development.

The selection was based on the evaluation of the Standardized Indicator of Departmental Performance (ISPD), as well as on the approval of a comprehensive and innovative development project aimed at strengthening the Department’s facilities, expertise, and academic activities.

Thanks to this recognition, DIARC will receive significant five-year funding to support the recruitment of new staff, incentivize existing personnel, expand and upgrade research infrastructures, and promote high-level scientific and educational activities.
