It is one of first 94 higher education institutions enrolling international students who can enjoy Chinese government scholarship for a master degree and a bachelor degree. The predecessor of Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute is China Ceramic Industry School founded in 1910; in 1947, Jiangxi Ceramic Industry Junior College was set up, which was one of five junior colleges in Jiangxi province; in 1958, with the general undergraduate organizational system, Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute was established, which was affiliated to the former ministry of light industry.

During a period of more than 100 years, Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute has always adhered to the mission of carrying forward Chinese ceramic culture and revitalizing Chinese ceramic industry, and put the school motto “honesty, austerity, magnanimous, perseverance” into practice.

As the feature specialty construction, research directions of design arts discipline at JCI are consisted of design histories and theories, traditional handcraft ceramic arts and decoration design, product design and ceramic materials, environmental design and ceramic engineering, the imperial kilns ceramic arts and heritage, visual and digital arts design and so on. Design arts discipline aims at fostering talents for developing the ceramic industry, promoting ceramic arts and culture. It constructs the knowledge structure and discipline system with special ceramic design education and research characteristics. It has outstanding teaching and researching staff and excellent education assurance. It also has made symbolic achievements such as the second prize of National Technology Advancement, and more than 200 scientific achievements successfully transformed into productivity, which push forward the transformation and upgrading and the scientific and technological progress of Chinese ceramic industry.

International Role

Main Focus

1 Cultivation of applied talents for undergraduates

Design arts has ten majors (major directions) including product design, digital media arts, visual communication design, environmental art design, public art, ceramic arts (ceramic & glass direction), ceramic arts (jewelry design direction), ceramic design, ceramic arts (ceramics) and ceramic arts & engineering (experimental). We focus on cultivation abilities of arts imagination, scientific research, analysis and design practice for undergraduates. We will cultivate high quality undergraduates with comprehensive knowledge of design arts discipline and interdisciplinary field, design practical abilities, creative ideas, creation and aesthetic abilities based on design arts combined with engineering and theory of sustainable development concepts.

It is achieved by teaching the students basic design theories and practical methodologies, design concepts of creative thinking, human-centered idea and sustainable design concept. It makes the undergraduates master engineering technology, aesthetic knowledge system, computer aided design technology, humanities and social science, which are necessary in the field of modern design, and have the abilities of researching, planning, management and creative design by the systematic training of modern designers.

2 Cultivation of innovative talents for graduates

We focus on the educational principles of comprehensiveness, artistic quality and creation concept. It is necessary to combine design arts with engineering technology, cultivate graduates’ design abilities of design expression, creative thinking and comprehensive research such as new materials and technologies, interdisciplinary academic areas. It is necessary to master natural sciences and humanities knowledge, design arts theories, basic handcrafts, design management and aesthetics for creation academic research.

It is achieved by teaching design theories, handcrafts, concepts of human centered design, methodology of creative thinking based on scientific research, curriculum planning, and interdisciplinary studying. It aims at improving the academic level and design innovation of design arts disciplines.

3 Focus on ceramic arts and handcrafts

Ceramic design arts and handcrafts are always our main concerns. Design arts discipline aims at cultivating students for developing the ceramic industry, promoting ceramic arts and culture.
