Mission Statement

The mission of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon (FBAUL) is the training, research and dissemination of knowledge in the fields of art, design, culture and science that are historically recognized, as well in the emerging fields of contemporary creation. FBAUL aims to contribute to the innovation and development of knowledge in its own teaching areas, to qualify the human resources necessary for the country's development and to advance with the knowledge in a global context, preserving and enriching the artistic heritage and cultural, and scientific design of Portugal.

International Role

Belas-Artes welcomes a large number of foreign students from partner institutions, who wish to take a part of their studies in Lisbon, being a success case nowadays at Universidade de Lisboa. With an increasing international visibility, the College currently has over 80 bilateral programmes of mobility and Erasmus research with some of the most important schools of Art and Design in Europe, Latin America and North America. Reference institutions stand out such as the Universitat der Kunst Berlin (Berlin University of the Arts), Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (Bauhaus-University of Weimar), Università degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza (Sapienza University of Rome), Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Complutense University of Madrid), Universitat de Barcelona (University of Barcelona), Université Paris 8 (University of Paris 8), Росси́йская акаде́мия худо́жеств (Russian Academy of Arts), Universidade de São Paulo (Universty de São Paulo), Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), מכון טכנולוגי חולון (Holon Institute of Technology of Israel), Université Laval (University Laval of Canada), among others.

National Role

Being the largest school of art and design in Portugal, the national role of the fine arts college is vast, the institution has multiple protocols with numerous national institutions and organizations.
To highlight some of the entities with partnerships and protocols with FBA:

  • University of Évora (cooperation with Hercules Laboratory)
  • Camara Municipal de Lisboa (between others: Project "Lojas com História" – experience Lisbon through its shops)
  • Protocol with Government – Council of Ministers

Main Focus

The focus at Belas Artes is both the artistic creation and the development of all stages of project in the field of design. In order to do so, the School places great emphasis on teaching, combining practical development of projects with intensive theoretical training in history of art and design, aesthetics and cultural studies.

Application Deadlines

There are several deadlines for application according to chosen regime type, for example, the first application deadline in 2018 was in february.

Teaching Languages

The teaching language is portuguese. The level of portuguese is not mandatory, but students are aware to the need of having B2 comprehension and writing level. In some cases (of need) some lectures and study material are provided in English.
