Assistant Lecturer – Art and Design EducationQualifications/
Experience
Candidates must have:
• A Higher Diploma in Art and Design teaching and a relevant degree (Level 8) with First or Second Class Honours of a recognised University; or of a recognised Degree Awarding Body; or equivalent professional qualification.
Qualifications/ Experience
Not less than 3 years relevant post qualification experience desirable:
The TU would particularly welcome applications from candidates with the following qualifications/experience:-
• A Masters, PhD or further level courses which support evidence of a proven professional practice.
• In addition, teaching experience at the levels operating within the School is extremely desirable.
• Evidence of continuing research/professional activity within the field of Art and Design Education
• A research interest in a/r/tography
• Interest/experience in interdisciplinary aspects of art and design (across two or more disciplines)
Principal duties and responsibilities
The appointee will play an active role in the academic direction of courses including teaching, research, academic assessment and academic administration. The appointee should carry out such duties as are assigned to them in accordance with collective agreements arrived at from time to time and authorised by the relevant Minister including but not limited to:-
a) Teaching such assigned classes as deemed appropriate by the management of the TU, day or evening, up to 630 hours per annum including supervision of post-graduate students where appropriate. There will be a norm of 18 class contact hours per week, which may be varied by TU management from 16 to 20 following consultation with the Assistant Lecturer. A weighting of 1.25 will apply to hours worked after 6.00 p.m.
(These arrangements are subject to collective agreements arrived at from time to time and authorised by the relevant Minister.
b) Carrying out assessment, monitoring and evaluation of examinations
work, and providing an academic and consultative support to students in their learning activities.
c) Providing academic input on existing and new courses and course
development.
d) Engaging in research, consultancy and development work as
appropriate.
e) Participating in committees appropriate to courses and meetings
convened by management.
f) Maintaining appropriate records and making available information as
required by management.
g) Engaging in promotion including student recruitment as appropriate.
h) Participating in the development, implementation and maintenance of
academic quality assurance arrangements.
i) Participating in appropriate activities necessary to the development of
their department/school and of the TU.
j) Directing and supervising the work of Tutor/Demonstrator and taking
academic responsibility for the academic standards of this work. When
an Assistant Lecturer is supervising a Tutor/Demonstrator a reduction in teaching hours will be applied on the basis of a one hour reduction per three hours demonstration/tutorials supervised.
k) The performance of these duties will require attendance in addition to class contact hours during the normal working week.
l) The appointee shall carry out the lawful instructions of the President (or authorised Officer) and comply with the requirements and regulations of the relevant Minister.
Head of Department – Fine Art & EducationQualifications/Experience
Candidates must:
(a) A relevant degree (level 8) with First or Second Class Honours of a recognised third level institution; or equivalent qualification.
and
(b) Not Less than 5 years of satisfactory relevant and acceptable post qualification experience in a relevant sector/industry setting.
Desirable: • An appropriate post-graduate qualification preferably at MA, PhD level or equivalent. • Demonstrable experience of leadership in advancing gender equality. • Specialist knowledge within one or more of the areas of Fine Art and Education • Experience in strategic goal setting and implementation planning. • Demonstrable leadership and motivational skills in a relevant sectoral setting. • Engagement with innovation within Art and Design Education or Fine Art • Experience and participation within the cultural or creative industries. • Experience in programme development • Experience of managing people and projects • Experience of research development
Principal duties and responsibilities
The appointee will report to the Dean of School.
The appointee will be responsible through the Dean of School to the President for the efficient and effective management and control of the assigned department, and for its development in accordance with TU policy and plans.
The appointee will lead, direct and manage the academic programmes at department level including teaching, research, programme development and design, academic assessment and academic administration.
The appointee will act as advisor and leader in quality assurance issues and will implement agreed quality assurance procedures and other procedures including staff progression, complaints processing, grievance and disciplinary, etc.
The appointee will manage and direct the academic, administration and technical staff assigned to the department. This will include timetabling and the evaluation of staff performance.
The appointee will work with the Dean of School and develop, agree, implement and manage School and Department policies.
The appointee will carry out such duties as are assigned by the President/Dean of School as appropriate including but not limited to:-
(a) Developing a rolling strategic and operational plan for the Department consistent with School and TU objectives and ensuring the staff are continuously advised on plans, policy and other necessary matters.
(b) Providing overall management and administration of the Department, including managing the Department budget and maintaining appropriate records and making available information as required by senior management
(c) Playing a leading role in the development, implementation and maintenance of academic quality assurance arrangements
(d) Providing academic leadership and scholarship on existing and new developing programmes, apprenticeship programmes, programme development and in programme coordination
(e) Directing and supervising the work of members of staff of the Department, including evaluating staff performance and acting in an advisory capacity and as a professional support in academic matters to colleagues
(f) Advising on and participating in recruiting suitably qualified staff and managing in consultation with the Dean of School and other relevant members of TU management the development and implementation of a staff development programme for the Department
(g) Participating in appropriate activities, including external activities, necessary to the development and promotion of the Department, School and the Institute; advising on and participating in the promotion and marketing of the Department, School and TU, its research, and its courses including the preparation of marketing literature and brochures and advising on student intake
(h) Teaching classes for up to 105 hours per annum and carrying out assessment, monitoring and evaluation of examination work and providing an academic and consultative support to students in their learning activities; directing and supervising the work of Tutor/Demonstrators and taking academic responsibility for the academic standards of this work
(i) Working with the central management team and participating in committees as required from time to time
(j) Liaising with awarding and regulatory bodies, trade and professional organizations, government agencies etc. as required
(k) Advising on equipment and physical requirements
(l) Participating in committees and meetings as required
(m) Carrying out such other appropriate duties as may be assigned by the Dean of School from time to time.
The appointee will carry out the lawful instructions of the President and comply with the requirements and regulations of the Minister.
The performance of this work will require regular attendance at the TU in addition to class contact hours during the normal working week.
