Mission Statement
Opening Up the Future
An open future in which societies can develop in a socially and ecologically sustainable way requires design paradigms that emerge from the interaction of knowledge in the arts, sciences and creative disciplines. This is what the Angewandte stands for. We support the sustainable and responsible shaping of the future through locally and globally relevant artistic, creative and research-oriented activities, as well as an education that is based on this. Development and appreciation of the arts, research and design as well as a reflective understanding of social transformation processes form the basis of university education processes that enable graduates to shape the future responsibly, creatively and proactively under changing conditions.
As a leading art university we set standards on an international level in the development and appreciation of the arts, in research and in transdisciplinary initiatives and teaching
by using integrative and critical thinking to promote the conditions for responsible behaviour and a socially creative spirit of innovation in society.

Research Activity and Main Areas
"Some research institutions base their development of internal logics on expertise, drawing on exemplary forms of cutting-edge practices, while others have gone in the direction of designing options for the present while reflecting on the future. Both are rewarding approaches for both art and science. At the University of Applied Arts Vienna work is being done on productively merging both. In the past years an environment was created – an environment in which boundaries are seen as open and then also in the new fi elds which one reached, the ground on which one stands is not familiar, one has to go further beyond it, at a certain level that is. That worked well and works much better. Every new day shows this." (p. 7, Thema "Art and Research") "Art and Research" Insert of the Wiener Zeitung Nov. 2013
As a leading center of excellence in art and research, the Angewandte is recognized nationally and internationally.
- By interdisciplinary combining its own in-house expertise with relevant research partners, the Angewandte contributes in diverse project constellations toward fulfilling innovative and sociopolitical goals.
- Graduates, participants in the creative industries (e.g. newly founded or innovation-oriented small and medium-sized businesses), cooperation partners and other interested parties make use of knowledge, supporting expertise and services offered by the Angewandte (e.g. in acquiring funding from EU grants).
- Thus the Angewandte fulfills a bridge function between national and international protagonists, whereby this function simultaneously ensures its sustained anchoring in relevant fields of practice.
