Mission Statement
Leveraging the university’s profound industrial heritage and the strategic advantages of its "Tri-Rotor" disciplinary framework, the School of Design takes "design-catalyzed innovation" as its core philosophy. It is establishing an innovative educational paradigm that breaks traditional disciplinary boundaries, integrates cutting-edge technologies, focuses on industry-education integration, aggregates global resources, and accelerates innovation transformation. This new design education model aims to nurture world-class applied and innovative design talents. While contributing to Shanghai’s development as a global science and technology innovation center and a design capital, the school also leads the transformation and upgrading of regional and global innovative industries, as well as the innovative design of social culture, ecological civilization, and humanistic care.
International Role
The institution maintains a robust international profile through the International Institute of Creative Design (IICD), featuring key strategic partnerships with Kongju National University (South Korea) and also other collaborative initiatives with institutions in the UK and Singapore. It hosts the 'International Cross-Media Creative Design Summer School' and is currently pursuing ASIIN international accreditation to ensure global standards in design education.
National Role
Shanghai University of Engineering Science (SUES) and its School of Design serve as pioneers in integrating "Art and Engineering" within national and regional frameworks. Aligned with the "Shanghai Capital of Design" and Yangtze River Delta Integration strategies, the school was designated as the "Shanghai Design Innovation Center" in 2021, focusing on cultivating high-end designers with engineering capabilities. Regarding collaboration, the school has built a robust industry-education ecosystem. By establishing R&D bases with over 10 enterprises like Haworth and SAIC Maxus, it links over 80% of graduation projects to real-world industrial needs. Simultaneously, through the International Institute of Creative Design (IICD), it fosters deep partnerships with institutions like Kongju National University (South Korea) and so on to integrate premium global resources. Currently pursuing ASIIN accreditation and hosting international summer schools, the school acts as both an intellectual engine for regional industrial upgrading and a vital hub for the internationalization of creative design education.
