Mission Statement

The Product Design Institute’s (PDI) role is to train industrial product design engineers who are capable of designing, producing, and marketing industrial products. The goal of the Industrial Product Design program’s goal is to train industrial product design engineers who are competent in meeting the challenges of the market economy with flexibility and efficiency, with their technical, aesthetic, human, and economic knowledge and skills. They have ability of independent, creative work in all the phases of product development and capable of managing the innovation process of product development and the material, organizational and human resources necessary for product development and the different cycles of the product life cycle. Also, they have enough theoretical knowledge to continue their studies in the second cycle of the training or work with a team within different company frames to develop the conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design.

The Antal Bejczy Center for Intelligent Robotics (ABC) is part of the University Research and Innovation Centre (EKIK). The iRob Intelligent Robotics Centre is committed to advancing the science and technology of robotics, primarily for service applications. The ABC Intelligent Robotics Centre was established as a primary response to the growing need for integrated education and application-oriented development in robotics. The Centre aims to develop expertise in manufacturing engineering, system testing, validation and commercialization. Technically, it will provide “Software as a Service (SaaS)”, “Platform as a Service (PaaS)” and finally “Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)” to other university units and external contractors. The key to its success is its ability to bring together mechatronics, software design and usability research to create the robot technology of tomorrow. ABC is willing to become a centre of excellence for R&D in service robotics, including medical, social and cloud robotics. The centre will initially focus on technology development, focusing on new devices, robot platforms and sensors, with appropriate control structures and user interfaces.

The aim of the YMF's training is to prepare students for being able to apply their complex knowledge in the fields of environmental development in general, and architecture in particular. Significant emphasis is laid on theoretical foundations and on design training, respectively, at a high standard. Creative and technical fields are well-balanced, with developing various skills in visual arts and engineering. The goal of the YMF's study program is to transfer knowledge in a structured way, and to provide marketable knowledge by introducing contemporary methods, materials and structures and software in accordance with the continuous development of the profession.

International Role

Students of the Obuda University collaborate with partner universities from 153 countries. PDI is a member of ERASMUS and CEEPUS educational networks. PDI has been involved in organizing international design and scientific conferences, the ISDIT section of the IJCELIT International Conference. PDI collaborates with university partners from CEE and WB Countries, Central Asia and Far East. The PDI offers Industrial Product Engineering program for the international students from 2016; several have successfully graduated so far on the PDI’s Industrial Design Engineering BSc study program.

The iRob Intelligent Robotics Centre (ABC) is an independent platform at the University of Óbuda, relying heavily on a national and international network of key partner institutions and companies in Europe and North America in particular.

The key objectives of the YMF are to link theory to design practise and to develop skills required in international team-work. The academic staff of the Faculty have proven expertise in Central-Eastern European Countries, as well as inside and outside the European region. This offers our candidates the possibility to discuss and to initiate programs and projects in their respective native country.

National Role

The Product Design Institute (PDI) of the Rejtő Sándor Faculty of Óbuda University is a leading institution in the country and has been playing the role of propagating and disseminating design awareness within the country. The institute has a vast network of industrial and business connections with SMSs, and collaborates with national and regional institutions and associations, such as Hungarian Fashion and Design Agency, The Hungarian Society of Textile Technology and Science (TMTE), Association of Hungarian Light Industry. PDI has been involved with organizing national design and scientific conferences and events like the ‘Focused On’ event series in the framework of the Budapest Design Week, or the series ‘Pro Fashion’ which’s aim is to create a platform for the Hungarian textile and fashion professionals. PDI has student exchanges with many design schools around the world.

The initial tasks of the ABC Center include reforming and modernizing the university’s robotics education, providing a permanent resource for students interested in robotics research.

Main Focus

The aim of the RSF PDI's Industrial Design Engineering program is to train industrial product and design engineers capable to design, manufacturing and distributing industrial products, particularly within an SME framework. Graduate industrial product and design engineers are technical specialists who are out-of-the-box thinkers and primarily design, manufacture and distribute durable consumer products and articles for personal use. In possession of their knowledge and skills of technology, aesthetics, humanities, and economics, they can carry out independent creative work in each phase of product development; they also know the innovation process of product development, as well as the material, organizational and human resources required for product development; and they are capable to manage product lifetime cycles. They are prepared to continue their studies at a master’s course and doctoral studies.

In 2020, the YMF, established 140 years ago, became part of OU, enhancing its educational offerings in the field of art. The addition of Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Architecture has further diversified the institution's academic profile. YMF's primary emphasis lies in cultivating the ability to discern various sub-disciplines within architecture and creatively integrate them into the overall design process. YMF's training program is specifically designed to foster the development of this skill. A distinctive feature of our architectural education is the prominence of the workshop method. Unlike traditional chronological knowledge transfer, YMF's project-based program stands out in the country by adopting a thematic approach to teaching topics. This innovative approach encourages students to break away from conventional learning methods and engage in a more dynamic and interactive educational experience.
