Philosophy
Education at MIT Institute of Design has been thought in a very broad manner to belong to three domains.

The first is the domain of skill. These are those design skills and design tools that should help students communicate convincingly the outcome of every stage of the design process. For this, they will learn to employ all necessary media and materials. If one has to look for a concept from the Indian philosophy that has an equivalence with this domain, that would be the concept of Sadhan.

The second is the domain of knowledge. It pertains the knowledge base the students’ must acquire from subject areas of varying nature. From this base, should flow meticulously gathered and researched information needed during the entire problem solving process. Again, an equivalent concept from the Indian philosophy to represent this domain would be Sadhana.

It is the third domain of formation that becomes the vital core of the design process. The total andcomposite learning from this domain is meant to make students think laterally and innovatively, develop, design concepts and translate the concept into a tangible form which in fact is the very solution of the stated problem of design. The equivalent concept from the Indian philosophy obviously, is Sadhya.

National Role

MIT Institute of Design is one of the premier institutes for design learning in India since August 2006. Located in Pune, Maharashtra with collaborations with multiple overseas institutes and global companies, the impact of work done at the institute can be seen far and wide across the globe. In meeting major societal challenges, which have both a global and local dimension, MIT Institute of Design has a key role to play in knowledge creation and its translation into innovative products and services in public and private sector, a process that can engage the creative arts and social sciences as well as scientists and technologists. Regions are important sites for innovation because of the opportunities they provide for interaction between businesses, public authorities and civil societies.

At MITID we believe in overcoming barriers, building capacity and implementing partnerships and leadership processes to interconnect the partners in regional, national and global innovation systems. These issues are illustrated by taking up practical examples and case studies taken from a range of sources and policy documents. Taking up projects that are close to locals, but also address national and global problem statements, we aim to ensure that the entire community reaps the benefits of our presence.

Main Focus

MIT Institute of Design was founded in August 2006, guided by the days leading minds in Indian design education, with a plan to develop its identity as a research & training institution of highest international quality. Being a pioneer in dissemination of modern design education in India, MITID has nurtured many design talents.

Over these years, the major achievement of MITID has been to create and promote a multidisciplinary learning environment for tomorrow’s design leaders. Many Bachelors and Masters of Design students who are a product of MITID are successful designers in the design world today.

MIT Institute of Design has been at the forefront of design education in India since 2006 and we are determined to play a leading role in the years ahead. Set up as part of the MAEER’s group under guidance of design thought leaders like Prof. Kumar Vyas and Prof. Dhimant Panchal, the foundation of the institute has been well established with its strong leadership, learning pedagogy, experienced design faculties and practitioners. In the past 15 years our institute has earned the reputation as one of the best design institutes of the country. We have collaborations with nine foreign universities for joint projects and ventures. Our ultimate goal is to introduce this institute on global platform as the premium institute for design learning & education.

MITID has successfully transitioned into being a constituent of MIT ART, DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY established by government of Maharashtra through ACT XXXIV 2015. With a decade plus of excellence and pursuance of one of our future aspirations, MIT Institute of Design with 1300+ creative minds on campus and 1000+ alumni professionals have added a further dimension to the programmes of design learning at our campus. The learners and faculty mentors have registered their presence by winning awards in various categories at national & international levels, including prestigious 2 Red dot awards won by our alumni and more than 20 design registrations. MIT Institute of Design is working closely with the national & international design community, being a member of CUMULUS, WDO (World Design Organization) and collaborations with more than 10 reputed Universities across the world. The concept of the Design Habitat is a logical and organic extension of our stated philosophy that ensures a total generalist ambience to enable design learning. It would evolve as an overarching concept around the functional framework of the Design Institute which remains an integral component of the Habitat. It is into this kind of stimulating and inspirational environment that mentors from various design related disciplines are invited to interact with the design learners and challenge their young minds to explore newer territories that should complement and reinforce their ongoing design learning. The mentors ensure that the level of interaction is such that it eventually leads to a learning that is comprehensive, sustained and focused in depth, and directly or indirectly design related.

Research Activity and Main Areas

Our research activities are projects commissioned by Government of India, industries and Non-Government development agencies. At our end the research activity becomes a part of the project which the institute undertakes.

The aim of the institute is to create a design community which will not only cater to the big industries but also to the small scale, rural industries and handicrafts. It has a social goal of developing and encouraging rural design and products for the needy and the large disadvantaged population in India. These are the few areas where basic research was undertaken by the institute and the students were also involved.

1. SWACH Project – Health and Hygiene

SWaCH provides door-to-door waste collection services to over 2 lakh homes in 14 municipal administrative wards in Pune. A project was undertaken by our students with the aid of the faculty members to design a trolley which is light weighted, easy to manoeuvre especially for the women workers. The trolleys were designed to be economically viable for waste pickers & fulfil sustainability at the same time. The detailing was approved keeping in mind the occupational safety and ergonomics for waste pickers.”

2. NREGS Project – Safety at work place

The NREGS TOOLS PROJECT was initiated by ‘National Knowledge Commission’ to address need expressed by NGOs working in State of Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan, helping rural population to access the benefits of ‘National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme’ (NREGS).

The project was formulated to address design need linked to the NREGS, which concerns those who seek employment opportunities in roads development and other public works.

Three basic tools used in rural roads development and other public works namely ‘Pick-axe’ (Gainti), ‘Grub Hoe’ (Phawda) and Metal ‘Basket’ (Tagada) to carry head load of earth & bricks needed design intervention from an ergonomic perspective particularly for Women.

3. SquatEase – Sanitation

An alumnus of MITID has researched and successfully designed SquatEase – a clean + comfortable toilet solution. The design of SquatEase is very scalable and commercially viable as it is a better version of the existing squat toilets. The product has been honoured by the Indian Prime Minister and UN Secretary General in 2018.

4. The No Spill Cup – Tools for ailing persons

A product design student of MITID has designed the ‘No Spill Cup’ for patients suffering from Parkinson. The cup is curved shaped at the rim and opening. It deflects the liquid back into the cup rather than spilling it out. The handle of the cup is bigger giving extra grip at the fingers for easy handling. The features of the cup aide these patients who experience rigidity, slowness of movement, shakiness and difficulty in walking.

5. Blee Watch – Technology for the disabled

Blee innovations is a startup founded by 2 students that works for the deaf community by providing technological and design driven solutions. Blee’s first innovation is Blee Watch which is a smart watch designed for the safety and independence of its users.

There are many more research projects and activities that are worth mentioning as accomplishments of MITID, its’ faculty, students and alumni.
