Mission Statement

The Wilson School of Design at Kwantlen Polytechnic University is dedicated to advancing excellence in design education, research, and creative practice, fostering interdisciplinary, practice-based learning, and preparing graduates to contribute innovatively and responsibly to industry, community, and global society.

International Role

The Wilson School of Design engages globally through partnerships with universities and institutions worldwide, supported by Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s network of over 60 active international partnerships, offering students and faculty rich opportunities for exchange, collaboration, and shared research. This includes the Fashion Marketing program’s collaboration with Nottingham Trent University, as well as connections that support joint projects, student and faculty mobility, and cross‑cultural learning experiences that prepare graduates as innovative, globally engaged design professionals.

National Role

Industry and Business Partnerships (National):

  • The Wilson School of Design works closely with prominent Canadian companies in the apparel and outdoor sectors — including lululemon athletica, Arc’teryx, Kit & Ace, Mountain Equipment Co‑op (MEC), Mustang Survival, Global Collective, and Sugoi — through curriculum development, practicum placements, collaborative industry projects, and work‑integrated learning opportunities.

Applied Research and Innovation:

  • The School has secured major applied research funding (e.g., a $1‑million federal research grant) to build capacity for industry‑responsive design research and engagement that addresses sustainability, inclusivity, and innovation needs.

Main Focus

The Wilson School of Design’s main focus is on undergraduate and postgraduate design education grounded in applied, practice-based learning. The School emphasizes the integration of design theory, creative practice, research, and industry engagement across disciplines including fashion, graphic design, interior design, product design, and digital design. Through project-based and experiential learning, the Wilson School of Design prepares students for professional, research-informed practice that responds to social, cultural, environmental, and economic contexts.

Faculties and Departments

Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is a publicly funded post-secondary institution in British Columbia, Canada, recognized for its strong emphasis on experiential learning, applied research, and community engagement. KPU offers a range of undergraduate degrees, diplomas, certificates, and postgraduate credentials across multiple faculties, including Design, Arts, Business, Health, Science and Horticulture, Trades and Technology, and Continuing and Professional Studies. The Wilson School of Design (WSD) is one of KPU’s signature academic units and serves as the university’s hub for design education, creative practice, and applied research. WSD offers four Bachelor of Design degree programs, three diploma programs, and one certificate program, spanning disciplines such as fashion and textile design, product design, interior design, graphic design, and design foundations. The School also delivers continuing and professional education and postgraduate-level learning opportunities that respond to industry, community, and emerging research priorities.

WSD’s pedagogical approach is interdisciplinary, practice-based, and socially engaged, emphasizing sustainability, technology, innovation, and equity-driven design. Research Activity and Main Areas

Research at the Wilson School of Design is interdisciplinary, practice-based, and applied, coordinated through the School’s Research and Applied Design (RAD) framework. Key areas include human-centered design, materials innovation, sustainable and circular design, inclusive and socially engaged design, ergonomics, and performance-based design. The School actively engages students in research through coursework, collaborative projects, and research assistantships. Faculty research is nationally recognized, with support from NSERC grants and participation in Strategic Research Investment Grant (SRIG) applications, and is strengthened through partnerships with industry, government, and community, reflecting the School’s commitment to innovation, applied knowledge, and global engagement in design.
