Mission Statement
Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts has a 100-year history, during which the peculiarities of training specialists in Kharkiv art education were formed.
The Academy is the only higher educational institution in Ukraine that trains designers of industrial products, specialists in the field of graphic design, interior design, decorative fabrics, clothing, specialists in trade and industrial advertising, corporate identity and packaging.
International Role
The Academy team is constantly looking for ways to implement new ideas and opportunities and hopes to expand the circle of partners and friends. To this aim, the faculty of "Design" initiated the following international competitions and festivals: International Triennial of Ecological Graphics "4th BLOCK", International Student Contest in Font and Calligraphy "Pangram", International Theater and Design Festival "ZhYVY!", International Poster and Animation Contest "ANTIAIDS – UKRAINE", International Exhibition "Graphics in Kharkiv" etc.
National Role
The Academy is the only higher educational institution in Ukraine that trains designers of industrial products, specialists in the field of graphic design, interior design, decorative fabrics, clothing, specialists in trade and industrial advertising, corporate identity and packaging.
Graduates of the Academy work fruitfully at enterprises and institutions of many industries, in design organizations, trade and industrial firms and associations, cultural and artistic organizations, higher and secondary specialized educational institutions.
Faculties and Departments
Now the Academy provides art education in twenty-nine different specializations at three levels of higher education and has four faculties:
– «Design»: graphic design, industrial design, multimedia design;
– «Environmental design», clothing design (footwear),; architecture and urban planning; art therapy and communication practices;
– «Fine Arts, Decorative Arts, Restoration»: graphics, street art and monumental art, easel painting, easel and monumental sculpture, restoration and examination of works of art, art history;
– «Audiovisual art and production»: advertising and video art, photography and visual practices, production and art curator, event management; audiovisual art and production.

Research Activity and Main Areas
Areas of scientific and artistic activity (for the Academy) have a range of scientific and artistic interests, outlined by the following issues
– history of design of Ukraine in the world context of artistic and design culture; design features of Central and Eastern Europe;
- processes of formation of national graphic identity;
- modern aspects of design-ergonomic culture; traditions of ecological design
- determination of socio-cultural components of the current state and perspective forms and methods of organization of domestic design education and professional activity;
- search for optimal models for the development of the national design system and bringing the State Standards for Industrial Design and Ergonomics in line with EU standards;
- development of theoretical foundations and scientific and methodological support of innovative areas of design design;
- research on ecological, innovative design and ergodesign;
- problems of optimization of the processes of design activity and design and art education based on the experience of leading foreign schools, including the partner university of the Academy – the University of Arts and Design Burg Hibichenstein from Halle (Germany);
- art of Slobozhanshchyna in the context of the history of Ukrainian art of the XVII-XX centuries;
- Oriental art history (oriental studies of art);
- Ukrainian art in the context of European artistic development;
- problems of sacred art in the context of Ukrainian-centric understanding of national multicultural heritage;
– audiovisual art and problems of contemporary visual practices;
– organization and participation in art plein airs;
– organization and participation in design competitions (International Triennial of Environmental Graphics and Poster "4th Block"), contests (International Poster and Animation Contest "Anti-AIDS – Ukraine", etc;)
– organization and participation in creative festivals, design forums (International Forum "Design Education", "Festival of Font and Calligraphy", etc;
– organization and participation in festivals of object design.
– organization and participation in student competitions, Olympiads in professionally oriented disciplines ("Academic Drawing Competition", "International Student Professional Creative Competition in Industrial & Product Design", etc.
Doctorate Level Programs
The Academy has 3 educational and scientific programs for the preparation of doctors of philosophy:
