Mission Statement
Since the foundation of the department in 1921 as Tokyo Higher School of Arts and Technology, we have always led the design research and design education in Japan. By encouraging “cross-fertilization”, i.e., highly creative activities emerging from the interaction between different areas, we have integrated and led the design research. As an educational institute, through the cross-fertilization, we have developed designers, design directors, and design researchers who can comply with various demands of now and future.
International Role
We have very active collaboration with partner universities and other institutions overseas. We conduct global education and research programs which aims to nurtue global designers. We collaborate with design schools in Europa and U.S.A. in CODE, Continets Design Education Programs, from 2011. with design schools in Central America in PULI, Post Urban Living Innovation education and reserach program, from 2015, with design schools in Asia in CAPE, Campus Asia Plant Environment Innovation Program, from 2016. We exchange researchers and teachers, conduct joint seminars and workshops, conduct international conferences and symposia, and participate in international competitions.
National Role
We have many collaboration opportunities with the national/local governments, educational/research institutions, and nation-leading private companies. We also cooperate with Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization. We have run the Japan Society for the Science and Design as a core institution, since it was established in 1954. Many alumni from our department are leading designers in major companies and maintain close relationship to us. Supported by “the good-practice grant” from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, we have developed and implemented several advanced programmes as a design initiative.
