Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle is looking to fill the following position in the Design department at the earliest possible date:

Professor for Design of Playing and Learning (W3)

Design of Playing and Learning, a field of study in the bachelor’s degree course Industrial Design and the master’s degree course Design of Playing and Learning, offers a range of classes that is unique in Germany and therefore a distinguishing feature of the Design department at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design.

We are looking for an experienced designer with outstanding practical and theoretical competencies of design in the context of playful interaction and knowledge transfer. Experience in teaching and pedagogical proficiency are required.

The topic of playing and learning permeates all areas of society and all life phases from childhood to adulthood. In this context, design is addressed as creating opportunities for the development of personality through the effects of play promoting perception and interaction and the conscious experience of self-efficacy. In a society characterized by change, playful exploration and methods of participation in socializing processes gain increasing importance and are conceptualized, critically reflected and put to the test in the Design of Playing and Learning. Methods of playful action are transferred into processes of learning and mediation.

The contents of the degree course enable students to experience the practice of design across a broad spectrum – from the design of inclusive, sustainable and visionary products, places and spaces for playful interaction and the creation of didactic media and exhibitions to the planning of campaigns or interventions.

In addition to fulfilling the general appointment requirements according to § 35 HSG LSA, the following will be expected from the successful candidate:
– The development of a teaching concept for subject-specific design skills and methods, from concept development and design and experimental testing to implementation;
– Teaching classes in the Bachelor’s degree course Design of Playing and Learning and in the Master’s degree course Design of Playing and Learning in complex design projects as well as in the subject-specific teaching of basics in exercises in the 1st and 2nd year of study;
– The organization and implementation of seminars in the degree courses to impart basic knowledge in relevant scientific fields of reference as well as overview lectures on current design discourses;
– The promotion of young academic/artistic talent and supervision of doctoral projects (PhD in planning) and the implementation of research projects;
– Committed participation in academic self-administration;
– Interdisciplinary cooperation with colleagues from other degree programs is welcomed.

The professorship can be held for a limited or unlimited period of up to five years; this will be decided in the beginning of the appointment procedure, with the decisive criteria being the structural planning of the university and the profile of the applicant. If the professorship is limited in time, the possibility of an unlimited appointment will be examined before the end of the limited term. The salary will be determined in accordance with legal and budgetary requirements.
