P/References of outer space

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live on another planet? Do you have your own preferences and/or references of the extraterrestrial lifestyle? If you are curious about life beyond Earth, join us at the Extraterrestrial design Working Group session. We will have a rich discussion in culture, medicine, design, and architecture that will offer our audience a different perspective on galactic life, and their speculations of the outer space. To quote Obi-Wan Kenobi in Return of the Jedi: “[Y]ou’re going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view”. Our perceptions of outer space depends on our prior knowledge and misconceptions, ‘our point of view’. Our speakers will inform us of their References and preferences of outer space based on their knowledge, disciplinary and cultural backgrounds; they join us from different corners of the planet. To find out you will have to attend and travel with us to the new frontiers, to design location Space X.

Our references of extra-terrestrial environments come from mass media and from perspectives of other people’s preferences and references of outer space. This workshop will offer 4 presentations and will ask participants to imagine outer space and we will challenge these ideas based not on biased P/References but on the reality of outer space.

Speakers

1. Dr. Thais Russomano, Innovaspace, UK https://www.innovaspace.org/ – online

Topic: Travelling in a spacecraft, living on a Moon base, exploring Mars or working in a spacesuit – all these activities must be safe and comfortable for humans to perform. This will depend on how living facilities, extraterrestrial habitats and astronaut clothing are designed. The Extraterrestrial Design lecture will present and discuss how spacecraft and space stations are currently designed, how astronauts eat, sleep and work during a space mission, and future plans for moon bases, trips to Mars, missions to nearby asteroids and space tourism, including hotels in orbit around the Earth and space gymnasiums for sports and games.

Prof. Thais Russomano, MD MSc PhD has +30 yr of experience in Aerospace Medicine, Space Physiology, Telemedicine & Digital Health. She is an MD from Brazil, specialised in internal medicine, has an MSc in Aerospace Medicine (USA) and PhD in Space Physiology from King’s College London (UK). She worked for 3 years as a researcher at DLR, Germany, before establishing and coordinating the Microgravity Centre, PUCRS-Brazil for 18 years. She is academically linked to several universities worldwide, is an Elected Academician of the International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine, and the International Academy of Astronautics (Board of Trustees). Thais is co-founder & CEO of InnovaSpace (UK), a company dedicated to the education, research and innovation of human space exploration, aviation medicine and digital health applied to extreme environments.
