Mission Statement

Sheffield Hallam University is one of the UK’s largest and most diverse universities: a community of more than 30,000 students, 4,000 staff and more than 250,000 alumni around the globe.

Our mission is simple: we transform lives.

We provide people from all backgrounds with the opportunity to acquire the skills, knowledge and experience to succeed at whatever they choose to do.

As one of the UK’s largest and most progressive universities, our teaching, research and partnerships are characterised by a focus on real-world impact – addressing the health, economic and social challenges facing society today.

We are ambitious for our university, our students, our colleagues, our partners, our city and our region. Our vision is to be the world's leading applied university; showing what a university genuinely focused on transforming lives can achieve.

International Role

Sheffield Hallam has experience and expertise working with over 100 partners worldwide. We believe that collaboration across continents can lead to great things — not just for our institutions, but for the wider world. It’s how we solve real-world problems and create lasting change.

Working together, we provide transformational experiences for students and staff — helping them build confidence, expand their horizons, experience new cultures and discover different ways of thinking.

Our vision
We will be the world’s leading applied university. As we expand our network of global partners, our priority is to provide transformational experiences for students. Each one of our partnerships is unique and developed to maximise mutual benefit. We work with like-minded institutions that share our vision and commitment to collaboration.

Work with us
We want to build new partnerships with institutions around the world that share our ambition and values. We are keen to expand the number of opportunities for internationalisation (both virtual and physical) that we offer to our students, and would be delighted to hear from interested fellow members.

Main Focus

We are an internationally connected creative community of diverse disciplines housed under one roof. We shape our students' futures, preparing them to shape the world through applied knowledge and creativity.

Our art and design courses don't just train, they promote alternative ways of thinking, making, and communicating; they provide space, tools, and inspiration for students to develop their creative practice and a clear career path. Students get expert teaching from active practitioners and researchers who encourage them to adopt innovative and resourceful approaches that both perceive and create opportunities for better lives. Students develop their creative practice whilst interacting with their peers in well-equipped studios, making, and digital workshops. At the same time, they learn professional skills by working on applied briefs facilitated through our links with commercial clients, cultural institutions, businesses, and organisations.

Research Activity and Main Areas

The Art, Design & Media Research Centre (ADMRC) is one of Britain's leading centres for research in the creative disciplines of Fine Art, Design and Media Production. Our artists, designers and film makers are at the forefront of practice-led research, through pioneering work in health care research, critically acclaimed independent film and public artworks. We have pioneered new thinking in how we can apply the expertise and experience of artists and designers to the creation of knowledge, striking a balance between developing the theory that drives our academic disciplines and making practical contributions to our economic and cultural life. Our work includes the creation of new methods and techniques for research and practice, products and artworks that change our understanding or create new knowledge, multi-disciplinary research with partners in a variety of disciplines and developing methods for transmitting ideas, skills and knowledge. We are committed to building a research-led academic community through our support for postgraduate studies at both Doctoral and Master's levels. The ADMRC is also home to Design Futures, a discrete unit within C3RI delivering packaging and product design research to industry. Design futures has a proven track record as innovators being cited as inventors or contributors to a portfolio of intellectual property, it has accrued a number of design awards.
