Mission Statement
Arts University Bournemouth (AUB), established in 1885 as a specialist institution, and is now a leading University offering high quality specialist education in art, design, media and performance across the creative industries. We remain passionate about our subjects and continue to encourage curiosity, risk-taking and adventure in exploring and pushing subject knowledge and its boundaries. AUB is one of a small number of higher education institutions in the UK devoted solely to the study of art, design, media and performance.
AUB provides students and staff with a well-resourced environment in which to practise to the highest professional standards. The University has been providing specialist education for over a century and enjoys a strong reputation, both nationally and internationally. We are special because we're specialist. We’re always investing in our campus, so that students study in spaces that keep pace with the creative industries. Head-turning Drawing Studios, high-tech Modelmaking workshops and a dedicated Student Centre are just a few of our recent developments.
We are a creative community and encourage collaboration across many of our courses. As a result, the campus is a real creative, imaginative hub, which gives our students a taste of what it is like to work in the creative industries.
The industry experience and engagement of our academics, and the advice and guidance of our impartial careers service, mean that our students are provided with a wide range of subject-specific and generic advice on employability.
Whatever your passion, we’ll help you get from A to B.

Research Activity and Main Areas
MPhil/PhD (Usually three years)
We offer an exciting opportunity for students wishing to undertake postgraduate research within or across both theoretical and practice based programmes in art, design, architecture, media, performance and creative pedagogy where Arts University Bournemouth can provide appropriately qualified supervision.
The format of study is very different from a taught degree. You will design your own programme of independent research guided by your Director of Studies and experienced supervisors. Together they will help you define what is original about your research and how best to present your arguments, either as a purely written thesis or combined with creative work.
Applicants should normally hold a first or upper-second class Honours degree and a Master’s degree. Applicants with alternative qualifications/experience will be considered if they can demonstrate relevant achievement. Research degrees are offered on a full and part-time basis.

Subject Areas for Exchange Students
We offer exchanges through our Partner Institutions in 12 countries. The aim of our Exchange Programme is to provide a culturally enriching experience, allowing students to develop new skills and techniques to enhance their project work on their course at AUB, and to boost their employability and future career prospects.
Our Exchange Programme covers both our Erasmus+ and International exchange activities – Erasmus+ applies to all countries within the EEA, with International covering the rest of the world.
The Exchange Programme is open to students enrolled on a full time undergraduate (BA) course at AUB. To study at AUB on exchange you need to be a student at one of our Partner Institutions and be studying an eligible course.
If you are not studying at a Partner Institution, you may still be able to apply to study at AUB for one or two terms through our Study Abroad Programme, which is organised separately.
All exchanges usually take place during Level 5 (2nd year), with the exception of students on BA Architecture, who go on exchange at Level 6 (3rd year). An exchange will usually last anywhere between 3 and 5 months, depending on the institution and study units you choose.
