Faculties and Departments

Department of Informatics and Media Design

Department of Industrial Innovation Design

Department of Architecture and Urban Design

Bachelor Level Programs

Bachelor of Design and Architecture

The Department of Informatics and Media Design deals with interaction design, audiovisual with Disabilities of Toyama Prefectural design, media engineering, media expression, information and telecommunication engineering, and human engineering.

The Department of Industrial Innovation Design combines expressiveness and form-giving with scientific methods based on physics and psychology for the purpose of enhancing the analyses of both the outside world as well as the inner world of emotion.

The Department of Architecture and Urban Design positions designs, plans, structures, materials, environments, equipment, and cities and regions as the pillar of its specialized education.

Master Level Programs

MA in Design and Architecture

In the Graduate School of Design and Architecture, students acquire a profound understanding of and a broad outlook and rich sensitivity toward human beings, acquire knowledge and ability related to scientific technology, and engage in creative research and production according to the aim of the graduate school to cultivate highly specialized professionals and researchers. The graduate school, consisting of three areas (Informatics and Media Design Area, Industrial Innovation Design Area, and Architecture and Urban Design Area), also aims to train students to acquire the ability to find clues leading to solutions to various problems in society, and to engaged in the creation of a sustainable society.

The graduate school is equipped with a complete system of education and research not only for general students who aim to become highly specialized professionals and researchers, but also for adult students with a diverse range of real-world experience seeking to renew their education or to make the most of the fruits of their research in their occupation.

The education and research content of the three areas are as follows:

1 Informatics and Media Design Area: Education and research area related to systems and software for enhancing the information environment for images and sound, interfaces, media engineering, media expression, and information and telecommunication engineering

2 Industrial Innovation Design Area: Education and research area related to design and technology where expressiveness and form-giving are fused into one with disciplines for scientifically interpreting natural phenomena and the inner world of emotion, such as physics and psychology

3 Architecture and Urban Design Area: Education and research area related to design and techniques involved in architecture and urban design where students acquire knowledge and techniques involved in architectural planning and design, structure, environment, and cities and regions

Research Activity and Main Areas

Research in the respctive fields of all faculty members.

Doctorate Level Programs

Doctor in Design and Architecture

The Doctor’s Course of the Doctoral Program aims to cultivate persons who can play an active role as researchers of the design and architecture area and as highly specialized professionals in leadership positions in various fields.

Students take the special research and special seminar of one of three courses, namely Informatics and Media Design, Industrial Innovation Design, and Architecture and Urban Design. Each student carries out research on a research theme, selected in consultation with their supervising faculty member, and sums up the research process and outcome in a doctoral thesis. A doctoral degree is granted on condition that the doctoral thesis is reviewed by a third person and published in a journal of the relevant academic body, etc. Usually, the student is placed under the tutelage of one main supervising faculty member and two assistant supervising faculty members. At an intermediate presentation meeting held twice a year, students receive the tutelage of all constituent faculty members. Thus, students can carry out their research taking advantage of the interdisciplinary characteristics of design and architecture.

Students can receive the benefits of schooling assistance systems besides scholarships, such as a research pursuance assistance system for the temporary employment as a teaching assistant (TA) and research assistant (RA) within the graduate school, and for the subsidization of travel expenses required to attend international academic meetings for presentations. Adult students can take advantage of a long-term course system which allows them to extend their attendance period to three years or more by paying the tuition for the number of years of the basic curriculum.

Graduate students enrolled in the Doctor’s Course of the Doctoral Program are engaged in research on highly specialized themes in the design and architecture field under the tutelage of faculty members who are specialized in information engineering, product design, acoustic design, architecture, environmental design, etc.
