Mission Statement

Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University carries responsibility for ensuring creative and high quality professional undergraduate and graduate programs. It aims to prepare innovative, creative, competitive free thinker students who have developed senses of culture, art, aesthetic, environment and social awareness. The university also encourages research and development in arts, design and science and share the knowledge with national and international institutions as well as with the society.

International Role

MSFAU is actively collaborating with numerous institutions all over the world for student and academic exchanges, research and projects, conferences, lectures and workshops. The University has almost over 200 bilateral agreements more than 20 countries across EU through Erasmus+ program and host over 60 international students and 20 academics/artists each year. 

University also has a special interest with collaborating Asian art institutions and actively interacting universities in Japan, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, Mongolia etc. through bilateral agreements.   

In 2017 Department of Architecture obtained validation from UIA / UNESCO (International Union of Architects).  MSFAU is also a member of EUA (European University Association), ALIA (Asian League of Institutions of the Arts), AEC (European Conservatories Association), EAAE (European Association for Architectural Education), FIAF (International Federation of Film Archives).

National Role

As the oldest and the first arts education institution in Turkey MSFAU always has a pioneering role in education of arts and design in the country for nearly 135 years. And therefore, the University is the guiding university of national art education politics and is the most popular fine arts institution among the students.

University aims to maintain an educational understanding which aims to improve constantly in the fields of art, design and science by keeping its contemporary and original structure; to strengthen the status of graduates and of the teaching staff on this universal platform through cooperation with the national and international educational institutions and with the non-governmental organizations. 
As it is also mentioned in the mission, University gives special emphasis on environmental, social and cultural issues as an actor of education. 

Supporting the education programs with practice and collaborations is an important notion for the university. For adding knowledge and experience of external parties from their current professional practice to the curriculum and encouraging creativity and innovation capacity of the students / academic staff, MSFAU is involved in collaborations with the culture sector, various industries and public bodies in different activities. By doing so University has an impact on fostering creative and economic competitiveness of Istanbul and Turkey in the long term.    

MSFAU is an important actor of arts and design life in Istanbul in many ways. University has a privileged exhibition hall in the cultural center of the city (Tophane-i Amire Cultural Center) that hosts large-scale art events and exhibitions, and 6 small galleries for other exhibitions. Besides hosting exhibitions, University itself is an organizer of creative, artistic and scientific events that also enhances the experience and knowledge. Academic staff, students and graduates are active parties of the arts and design events as participants, organizers or hosts that are leading the sector.

Main focus of the university is professional training in BA level and research and innovation in MA and PhD levels on arts and design related fields.

Subject Areas for Exchange Students

The University supports exchanges in all fields and also in all levels of BA, MA and PhD/DA, as well as the international workshops and exhibitions that encourages collaborative learning, experiencing and production.

Teaching Languages

Teaching Language of the university is Turkish, however there are courses in English language for exchange students. On the other hand, since the education at art and design departments are studio based, the students interact with lectureres directly. Therefore, for art and design students, language is not a barrier. 

Semester Dates

The semesters consists of 14 weeks of lectures and two weeks of final exams.

Fall semester: September-January

Spring semester: February-June

Cost of Living Per Month (Studying and Living)

There is no tuition for exchange students that are incoming with Erasmus and/or bilateral agreements. 

The average cost of living expenses is around 500 Euro
