Mission Statement

Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) is a leading design institution under the VTC Group. It provides high-quality education to cultivate knowledge and professionalism, nurturing emerging talents who underpin the creative industries in Hong Kong.

With years of experience in design education, HKDI brings together the strengths of its design departments – Architecture, Interior and Product Design, Communication Design, Digital Media and Fashion and Image Design – to provide over 20 design programmes. Highly flexible in articulation and advanced education, HKDI offers students a three-year university degree pathway from a Higher Diploma to one-year Bachelor degrees offered by reputable universities in the UK.

HKDI adopts a “think-and-do” approach through its contemporary curriculum and active collaborations with local and international academic and industry partners. Students are given opportunities to acquire hands-on experience and participate in global exchange programmes to expand their horizons while enhancing their creative thinking and social sensitivity.

International Role

HKDI is dedicated to cultivating students’ global perspective and cultural sensitivity. Through partnerships with over 40 renowned design universities around the world, we offer an opportunity for students to engage in cross-cultural learning. Our partners include the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University and Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology in China; Bunka Gakuen Educational Foundation in Japan; Hongik University in South Korea; RMIT University, University of New South Wales and University of Technology Sydney in Australia; Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne, Haute ecole d'art de design Geneve and Zurich University of the Arts in Switzerland; Domus Academy, Istituto Europeo di Design and Politecnico di Milano in Italy; Glasgow School of Art, Ravensbourne University London, Manchester Metropolitan University and University of Arts London in the UK; Southern California Institute of Architecture and The New School in the US; to name a few.

National Role

To connect the world design community, HKDI is a member of important design associations, including the Cumulus Association, International Council of Design (IcoD), World Design Organization (WDO), International Foundation of Fashion Technology Institutes (IFFTI), International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI), International Institute of Information Design (IIID), DESIS Network, etc.

Faculties and Departments

HKDI brings together the strengths of the Design departments to offer Higher Diploma programmes spanning across Architecture, Product and Interior Design; Communication Design; Digital Media; and Fashion and Image Design.  Graduates of Higher Diploma programmes may continue their degree programme studies in Hong Kong via Top-up Degree programmes offered by the School for Higher and Professional Education (SHAPE) in conjunction with UK universities, which include Birmingham City University, Coventry University, Nottingham Trent University, University for the Creative Arts, University of Lincoln and University of Westminster.
