Cumulus, the Global Association of Art and Design Education and Research, is pleased to announce the awarded projects of Cumulus Green 2022: Nurturing Our Planet, the signature biennial student competition of the Association that aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This year’s theme focused on SDG 2: Zero Hunger. The international jury of Cumulus Green awarded three winners and 35 honorable mentions to the top projects in categories including products, services and systems. They jury sought to recognize exemplars among the 222 submissions from 60 universities and 27 countries that show how to transform our food systems to end food insecurity by creating better conditions for an equitable and environmentally prosperous world.
As Co-chairs of the competition, Prof. Jose Allard and Vice-Dean Anne Pikkov, remarked in the call for entries: In times of crisis and accelerated changes Cumulus Green represents an invitation to rethink the meaning and purpose of Design by tackling challenges “for the real world” based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Cumulus Green 2022 is focusing on SDG2: Zero Hunger. The competition invites you to take on the many interrelated opportunities that come with the challenge of imagining what it might take to ensure 9 billion people across the world do not go hungry. More than a competition for design students, Cumulus Green is a global window into the future of Design.’
The Cumulus Green 2022 competition kicked off in spring of 2021. A total of 222 submissions poured in from 60 universities across 27 countries. Innovative solutions were encouraged within three submission categories: products, services and systems.
Jury Co-chairs and Cumulus Board members Professor José Allard (PUC Chile, Chile) and Vice-Dean Anne Pikkov (Estonian Academy of Arts, Estonia) point to the timely relevance of the competition’s theme and goals: “The competition invites you to take on the many interrelated opportunities that come with the challenge of imagining what it might take to ensure 9 billion people across the world do not go hungry. More than a competition for design students, Cumulus Green is a global window into the future of Design.’
Cumulus Green 2022 counted with a prestigious global jury from academia and practice with experts in sustainable and critical food design, food philosophy, regenerative agriculture and global food systems. Joining co-chairs Allard and Pikkov, the jury was represented by Rahul Bhattacharya, Erik Ciravegna, Dolly Daou, Lynda Deakin, Daniel Grushkin, Philipp Heidkamp, Soojin Jun, Silvana Juri, Anna Meroni, Pedro Reissig, Vishnu Swaminathan, John Thackara, Xiao Yong, and Francesca Zampollo.
Solutions were judged based on desirability/feasibility, evidence of a rigorous research process, and degree of innovation. The Jury celebrated the quality and diversity of the submissions and was thrilled to ultimately give the top prizes to student team projects, with entries that showcase the power of collaboration in design.
Cumulus Green 2022 is proud to announce its three winners:
The first-place winner, Self-reliance for the persecuted, was developed by Team TDV – Mayank Raj, Manisha Bisht, Yukti Anand – graduates and students at the Design Village, India. The aim of the project was instilling food security, self-reliance and building identity for Rohingya refugees residing in temporary settlement of New Delhi, India. The project recognized a gap created by the discrimination between alive and living and proposed a service to not just address the pressing issue of nutrient deficiencies in the community, but also develop a sense of general wellbeing by using the existing skills of Rohingya refugees in bamboo work and leveraging their cultural knowledge of farming.
The second-place winner, LixiLab, by Team LixiLab – Daniela Barón, María Valentina Forero, María Alejandra Parra, Valentina Pérez, Lina Sánchez, Laura Velasco– students of Universidad de Los Andes Colombia, proposes an accessible soil bioremediation technology to extract heavy metals in small farming communities using a dead bacterium. This project started in Mochuelo Alto, a rural community in the outskirts of Bogotá, located next to the city’s landfill. LixiLab is a grassroot, feasible solution joining science and design to develop hands-on practical strategies along with farmers’ knowledge and tools.
The third-place winner, Rice Bran Foundation, by Kentaro Sohara, Giovanni Bruno, Kaori Kawarazaki, Lisa Koga, Melba Catania – students from Politecnico di Milano, Italy is a system to contribute to the fight against hunger using rice bran following the example of Japan where the bran has been used for various purposes. The Rice Bran Foundation is a program that creates economic value from rice bran that would otherwise be discarded in Italy and converts the proceeds into fertilizer making kits that can be used in developing countries for distribution. This will enable rice farmers to create their own organic fertilizer, helping them to have higher productivity and bringing climate resilience into their soil and rice production.
In the current economic situation, Cumulus is thrilled to support the winning teams counting altogether 14 students with monetary prizes. In addition to these winning entries, Cumulus GREEN 2022 has announced 35 honorable mentions. These projects represent a broad diversity of the Cumulus membership.
