The University of Deusto seeks excellence in research and teaching. It simultaneously aims to train free people, responsible citizens and competent professionals, endowed with the knowledge, values and skills that allow them to commit to promoting knowledge and transforming society.
The University of Deusto aims to serve society through a specifically university contribution and based on a Christian vision of reality. It is presided over by the love of wisdom and the desire to know and investigate the structure of reality with scientific rigor and methodology.
The Design Area has a clear international vocation and since its launch agreements have been established with more than 40 universities in Europe, Latin America, the United States and Asia. As a University of the Society of Jesus, the University of Deusto forms part of the International Association of Jesuist Universities, which has more than 200 associated universities throughout the world.
In addition, the research team has participated in competitive -public and private- funding projects, such as European Urban Regenerators Knowledge Alliance, Open Design and Manufacturing or Co.Create in the Erasmus+ program, as well as in Europe Horizon projects or collaborations with UNESCO Creative Cities Network .
The University of Deusto feels particularly close to Basque society, which it wants to serve as an institution, both in its cultural needs and in social, technical and economic development at all levels. The Design Area thus arises to respond to the growing interest of its nearby context in promoting design and the cultural and creative industries. Specifically, the inclusion of design among the strategic priorities of the Basque Country, the creation of institutions such as the Bilbao Bizkaia Design Council and the support of institutions such as the Bilbao City Council, the Bizkaia Provincial Council and the Basque Government.
At the same time, the Design Area demonstrates its regional and national role through active collaboration with public and private entities through academic projects and internship agreements, as well as research projects and associations with entities such as Basque Designers' Association (EIDE) or the Design Institute of Spain (DIOS).
The Design Area of the University of Deusto emerged within the Faculty of Engineering in 2015 with the launch of the Degree in Engineering in Industrial Design and the Double Degree in Engineering in Industrial Design and Mechanical Engineering. Since its creation, this area of knowledge has focused on training students oriented towards the creation of products, services and experiences, understanding design as an area that is situated between technique and the market, and in which a large number of areas of expertise participate. From technical aspects of engineering, to humanistic education in values and the inclusion of social science knowledge, the orientation of this academic project has a clear vocation to serve its closest context, through active collaboration with companies and institutions.
Thus, design is understood by the University of Deusto as a key discipline both operationally and strategically in the innovation of industries and society.
