Mission Statement

We are one of the world’s leading art and design schools and we have been influencing, inspiring and innovating for over 175 years. We are guided by our past, focused on our future, and proud to be shaping what comes next.

International Role

Here at the School of Art & Design, we are committed to developing a culture of internationalisation, and making a contribution to the world through everything we do. This is reflected in the impact we make on the student experience, academic and research arena through student and staff mobility, partnerships, collaborations, and our global alumni network.

Our ambition as an internationally focused university is to nurture global citizenship, engage with the international research community, and attract talented students and staff from around the world.

We are proud to be a global university that welcomes students and staff from over 150 countries. At NTU, we aim to give all students and staff the opportunity to gain global experiences on or off campus through our international curriculum, student experience and range of opportunities for students and staff to study, work and volunteer abroad.

The approaches we take to connecting globally are supported by a strategic network of international partners and are articulated around three pillars.

·       We will grow our numbers of international students to stimulate a vibrant multinational learning community and diversify our income streams.

·       We will further promote internationalisation in the curriculum and enhance opportunities for our students to acquire the international perspective needed to succeed in the global community.

·       We will focus on building a strategic network of international partnerships with peer universities, businesses and civic authorities in selected territories.

National Role

From tackling cancer, to making our cities greener, to creating smart textiles that improve and save lives; Nottingham Trent University are making major breakthroughs across our key research themes. And, through our thriving research culture, we’re also creating the innovators of the future who will continue to have an impact on world problems.

By sustaining the regional economy, we are creating local opportunities for student employment and boosting graduate retention in the region. We also work with businesses to design industry focused courses, and create new routes to learning that widen participation.

From before they set foot in our University right through to the moment they become an NTU graduate and start their first job, we're making sure nothing holds students back from achieving remarkable things.

We start from the beginning with our outreach into local schools, encouraging 30,000 pupils each year to dream big and achieve academic success. Within our own walls, we help our students stay motivated and on track using our student dashboard. We also provide gold-standard teaching, and through our links with industries we create opportunities for volunteering, studying abroad, and work experience with every course. We’re ranked Gold for teaching and learning in the Teaching Excellence Framework.

Research Activity and Main Areas

Our researchers include practitioners and theorists. Relationships that exist between their approaches mean we can develop future-orientated work that addresses the challenges that face culture and society, particularly in relation to consumption and sustainability, well-being and regional heritage. This builds on strong regional, national and international links that have resulted in collaborations with the V&A, Nottingham Contemporary and the World Event Young Artists 2012.

The work of the subject area includes:

  • developmental research work in technical textiles
  • design for medical applications
  • research in sustainable design and material culture that applies social science methods, history of design, and research embedded in critically engaged art and craft practice.

Doctorate Level Programs

The School provides opportunities for postgraduate study leading to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

Subject Areas for Exchange Students

We encourage all our students to be global citizens, from the moment you join us through to your graduation and into employment. To help you develop the global perspectives and intercultural experiences valued by employers today, we offer plenty of opportunities for students to internationalise their learning while at NTU.

NTU has access to over 300 member institutions around the world, and each course has different study abroad options. You can search our study exchange partners by course on our study exchange site. (https://www.ntu.ac.uk/studenthub/study-abroad/what-can-i-do/study-exchange#where_)
