21st Century Colour Education – CWG
The 21st Century Colour Education Working Group recognises colour as a meta-discipline, strengthening the bridge between the arts and sciences, and foregrounding its vital role at the intersections of theory, practice, and technology within contemporary art and design practices. This working group offers an academic platform to share knowledge, strategies, tools, and resources relevant to teaching 21st century colour skills in alignment with the challenges of our evolving global culture.

First meeting at Cumulus Budapest 2024
Our first CWG session will begin with two talks by colour educators: Ingrid Calvo Ivanovic will present her research on the state-of-the-art of colour teaching in the design discipline; and, Robert Hirschler will propose a discussion on the main topics of colour science to include in the curriculum of visual artists, designers, and architects. After that, we’ll get to know each other through a collective reflection on the current challenges and opportunities for colour teaching in our art and design institutions.
Ingrid Calvo Ivanovic
Colour Designer, Researcher & Consultant. PhD in Design Research, Politecnico di Milano. Assistant Professor of the Design Department of Universidad de Chile. Member of the Executive Committee of the International Colour Association (AIC), the Editorial Board of the Color Research & Application Journal, and the AIC+ISCC Colour Literacy Project. Ingrid is a full-time researcher and epistemologist in the field of colour, developing methodologies for its study, teaching, and application in design, architecture, and art.
Robert Hirschler
Robert Hirschler has been actively involved in all aspects of colour theory, science, technology and education since 1966. Robert graduated at the Technical University of Budapest in chemical engineering/textile chemistry. He has been involved in the International Colour Association (AIC) activities for over 50 years. He is an active ProCor (Brazil) and the Hungarian National Color Committee member. Since 2010 he has been the Chair of the AIC Study Group on Color Education and since 2018 Co-Chair of the Colour Literacy Project. He is one of the Senior Editors of the prestigious Wiley journal Colour Research and Application.
