Mission Statement
VCUQatar is the Qatar campus of the prestigious Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Richmond, Virginia. Established in 1998 through a partnership with the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, VCUQatar offers students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design, interior design and painting & printmaking Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History and a Master of Fine Arts degree in design. VCUQatar is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art & Design, The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. VCUQatar has substantial involvement with the emerging design industries in Qatar and the region and is a significant catalyst for that growth. It has established itself as a center of excellence for education and research in art and design. Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar exists to foster a scholarly climate that inspires creativity, a free and open exchange of ideas, critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, freedom of expression, and intellectual integrity. With the exponential growth in Qatar and the region, the participation of our students and graduates in all sectors of society is vital. Successful economic and cultural growth requires the conscientious design thinking and creative processes that are core to VCUQatar’s educational approach. Designers and artists amplify their cultural context though the creation of products, communications, fashions, systems, and many other forms of art and design. Designers help people understand and find comfort in environments as large as a city, a hospital, or a park, and as small as an office, a book or a mobile phone. VCUQatar is a center of excellence for education and research in art and design. Through its programs, the university develops individual capacity to lead innovations in the creative and cultural professions in Qatar and the region. Our alumni are spreading their creative vision through their work as entrepreneurs, and as designers in public and private organizations. Their expressions will have a lasting impact on a sustainable future both in Qatar and internationally. Our vision is a Qatari society that innovates through art and design.

Research Activity and Main Areas
VCUarts Qatar Launches Institute for Creative Research
The Institute’s governing operations will be led by Dr. Diane Derr, Associate Dean for Research and Development. The Institute is made up of faculty-led Research Labs. Together, these Labs at VCUarts Qatar explore areas as diverse as nanotechnology, product design and development, data processing, computation, and sound design, to transformative pedagogy, cultural preservation, and Arabic typography. Each Lab supports in-depth investigations by teams of faculty, students, and alumni, and enhances community engagement and impact. The Labs provide students with hands-on experiential learning, and recent alumni with valuable professional development.
