Mission Statement

As a result of its varied history, the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin) is both a young institution and an old one. The university’s current structure has developed over the decades since its founding in 1975 as “Hochschule der Kuenste” (HdK); in November 2001 the institution was renamed “Universitaet der Kuenste Berlin,” or Berlin University of the Arts. Taking into account its predecessor institutions, however, UdK Berlin has a history of more than 300 years, going back to the founding of the Brandenburg-Prussian Academy of Arts in 1696.

The “Hochschule der Kuenste” was created by the merger of two arts academies, the “Hochschule für Bildende Kuenste” and the “Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst” in what was then West Berlin in the 1970s. Both academies had been close neighbors since 1902, when they began using the building complex at the corner of Hardenbergstrasse and Fasanenstrasse in Berlin-Charlottenburg, which is still in use today.

Research Activity and Main Areas

Among the world’s Art Schools the Berlin University of the Arts Berlin is comparably outstanding in size, diversity, or wealth of tradition – in both the arts and arts-related science. While the scientific scope and the mix of basic and application-oriented research resemble those of traditional academic universities, the immediate proximity to the arts is what truly sets the UdK Berlin apart. This proximity, together with the ways in which scientific subjects are embedded in the artistic and scientific/artistic degree programs, leads to a strong culture of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary communication. The scientific profile of the UdK Berlin is thus characterized by energetic and varied cooperation among the sciences, as well as between the sciences and the arts.

Doctorate Level Programs

Berlin Centre for Advanced Studies in Arts and Sciences (BAS), Graduate School, Hybrid Plattform, Berlin Open Lab
