Mission Statement

The mission of Rhode Island School of Design, through its college and museum, is to educate its students and the public in the creation and appreciation of works of art and design, to discover and transmit knowledge and to make lasting contributions to a global society through critical thinking, scholarship and innovation.

International Role

RISD is a highly global School. 37% of the total student population at RISD requires visas to study in the US, and many other students, staff and faculty come to our campus from across the world. We actively engage with over forty partner schools through our Global Exchange program, as well as many others through partnered learning activities. In addition, RISD is engaged with international industry through the activities of our faculty, our academic departments, research office, and other strategic and student-led initiatives.

National Role

RISD is committed to its role as a leading art and design School in the United States. It is a member of the Association of Independent Art and Design Schools (AICAD). RISD actively works with local and national partners in education, government, and the public and private sectors to create educational opportunities for our students, as well as members of the public. Additionally, through the RISD Museum, we have a deep commitment to educating and inspiring artists, designers, students, scholars, and the general public through exhibitions, programs, and publications.

Main Focus

RISD is composed of four Academic Divisions: Experimental and Foundation Studies, Liberal Arts, Architecture and Design, and Fine Arts, individual departments of study (listed above) are framed within these divisions.

Additionally, RISD has a number of academic commons areas of focus, including (but not limited to): the Edna Lawrence Nature Lab, RISD Global, Center for Arts & Langauge, RISD Research, RISD Campus Exhibitions, RISD Research, Center for Complexity, Co-Works Research Lab, and RISD Library, Archives and Materials Resource Center.

Bachelor Level Programs

BA/BFA Programs: Apparel Design, Architecture, Ceramics, Film/Animation/Video, Furniture Design, Glass, Graphic Design, Illustration, Industrial Design, Interior Architecture, Jewelry + Metalsmithing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, and Textiles.

The duration of study for a RISD BFA is typically 4 years, including the first year in the Division of Experimental and Foundation Studies.

Master Level Programs

MA/MFA/MDES/MAT: Architecture (2 and 3 year programs), Ceramics, Digital + Media, Furniture Design, Glass, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Interior Architecture (1- and 2-year+ programs), Jewelry + Metalsmithing, Landscape Architecture (2 and 3 year programs), Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Teaching + Learning in Art + Design (1 year program), and Textiles. 2 years unless noted otherwise.

MA Global Arts & Culture and Nature, Culture and Sustainability are two Liberal Arts-based masters degrees that are 18 months.

Typically, our deadline for applications to study at RISD on global exchange are due the first week of March. And, our deadlines for applications to study at RISD on global exchange are due the first week of October.

Teaching Languages

RISD classes and studios are taught in English. Students studying on exchange at RISD are expected to have a very strong working knowledge of English.
