Mission Statement
FH JOANNEUM offers students sound academic training – our programs are practice-oriented, project-based and interdisciplinary. In other words, we work in close cooperation with business and industry to put acquired knowledge into practice, we develop innovative solutions for topical issues in applied research projects and forge links to related disciplines. Teaching is conducted in small teams, which means that students receive individual support from experienced lecturers. Together with intercultural skills, students at FH JOANNEUM also acquire soft skills and advanced knowledge of foreign languages, which in combination with their specialist know-how open up excellent career opportunities for key positions in Austria and abroad.
The Department of Media & Design shapes tomorrow’s worlds of communication. We develop design solutions for products and services, create and design content for various channels of communication and work creatively in a digitally networked environment. In close cooperation with companies and institutions we translate practical requirements into functional and aesthetic solutions. Leading visionaries in the field continuously inspire our imagination and foster our implementation expertise. The wide range of opportunities available to graduates from our degree program is reflected in the diverse careers they pursue. But there is one thing all our graduates have in common – a passion for future-oriented communication and design.
International Role
Our university’s large network enables students to complete internships with leading companies and institutions in Austria and abroad and spend a semester studying at one of over 300 partner universities around the world. The Department of Media & Design benefits from Graz’s nomination as UNESCO City of Design. Hence the city is connected with all other Cities of Design around the world. Projects, workshops and exhibitions are results of an intensive communication between cities and institutions. Moreover, the Industrial Design program is the first Austrian Design department to have been rated an outstanding educational institution by the Bureau of European Designers’ Association (BEDA), which is associated with Design Austria, a member of ICSID and the Austrian Design Foundation.
National Role
Located in a UNESCO City of Design, students find a lively environment with a strong affinity for design in the city of Graz, the second largest city in Austria. The high concentration of cultural institutions as well as local industry, such as the automotive industry, creates a perfect work and study environment.
Main Focus
We shape the media and design of the future.
