Call for expressions of interest
FINDER calls for expressions of interest.
We are a new CWG exploring the state-of-the-art and the futures of Industrial Design Education and Research.
We are looking for Cumulus members with units of Industrial, Product, or Service Design to participate in the CWG meeting to be held 8.30 – 10.00 am on the 14th of April at the Cumulus Antwerp 2023 conference.
You will join a conversation on building an interactive map showing units’ Practice-Based research and network.
In this meeting, we will present the activities to be carried on in this Working Group and how these activities will help foster collaboration and promotion of the involved members.
>> Participants are invited to contribute to the conversation with their visions and concerns related to their research areas, visibility, and network.
After the CWG meeting, interested members will be contacted to proceed with the activities.
The meeting is open to all. However, for the project’s feasibility, CWG will need to fix a certain number of effective participants to carry on with the project.
In total, we are looking for Cumulus Industrial, Product, or Service Design members equally representing the following geographic areas:
Up to 5 from Europe
Up to 5 from the Americas
Up to 5 from Africa
Up to 5 from Asia and Oceania
Up to 5 from the Middle East and India
These members will help build the core of the CWG and set the grounding for further CWG expansion and openness for all.
Please, submit your expression of interest here.
Group Short Description
As reflected in the proposed name(s), we believe that the establishment of a Working Group should be supported by a thorough understanding of the Cumulus’ IND ecosystem, and its members.
To meet this target, the Department of Industrial Design XJTLU launched a research project – approved and supported by the Design School* – to explore the Cumulus network of Design Research units, activities, outcomes, and stakeholders. The goal is to map recent and current research in the Industrial, Product, and Service Design fields to bridge different contexts and approaches to research and design with their outcomes. The expected result is a database that can be visualised through navigable maps designed with kumu.io; this repository will facilitate access to data, and will allow their critical analysis through the lens of Design Research in multiple ways: research trends, research outcomes, design units within Cumulus Association, people engaged, partners and other stakeholders, etc. The project duration is one year, and its results will be the starting point for the setting of annual targets of the CWG, and its activities. The CWG format will allow calling members to exchange information and co-design the map and future activities. This group is inspired by the previous CWG CIDER (Cumulus Industrial Design Education and Research Working Group).
Outcomes
Milestones of the research project will be shared in the Cumulus conferences (Antwerp 2023 and Amman 2023) in the form of group discussions.
The results of the work titled “Ecosystem of Design Streams of Cumulus Industrial Design members” is planned to be published as a research paper under Cumulus ISBN.
The interactive map will be accessible online to all members for their research or promotional purposes.
