BACKGROUND

Cumulus was initiated in 1990 and transformed into association in 2001 and became global in 2006. It is the only global association representing education and research in art, design and media having in 2012 close to 200 institutional members from 45 countries and representing around 200.000 students.

The scope of Cumulus activities and visibility is global. Cumulus has a number of partnerships around the world like AIGA American designers professional association, ICOGRADa the international association for the graphic designers,  BEDA Bureau of European Design Associations, ELIA European League of the Institutes of the Arts, EIDD Design for All, NASAD the National Accreditation of School of Art and Design in US, OHIM is the European Union agency responsible for registering trademarks and designs located in Spain, DESIS Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability Network and Design Research Society. Cumulus is recognized by UNESCO and through different EU directorates e.g. in collaboration with the EU Directorate General Enterprise and Industry EESC European Economic and Social Committee awards. Cumulus may expand its partnerships globally. It is a frequently asked contributor to projects, conferences and actions internationally. 

Cumulus family meets also during the annual conferences under Cumulus umbrella organized in collaboration with the members. A variety of projects under Cumulus umbrella are going on annually and the association is supporting the actions by the members. Cumulus and the CEB use as its creative linking tools the website, publications, exhibitions, participation in project and activities. The executive board and the president and the secretariat represent Cumulus globally. Cumulus member institutions have the opportunity to strengthen their partnership, actions and knowledge transfer in and through Cumulus supported by the CEB, president and the secretariat. Cumulus also has close to 20 multidisciplinary working groups around specific topic of interest of people of Cumulus like Cumulus Sustainability, Leadership and Strategy; CURE Research, Digital Culture,  X-files, Water etc. that create further tools.

The first Cumulus Executive Board I included seven members and the president, it was elected in March 2001 Rotterdam General Assembly. CEB II included eight members and the president and it was elected in Oslo Norway 2004 May General Assembly.  CEB III included 10 members and the president and it was elected in General Assembly in Schwäbisch-Gmünd Germany in 2007 as well as the CEB IV was elected in Genk Belgium General Assembly in May 2010 with 10 members and the president. The General Assembly has the authority to define the number of members in the board. The language of the association is English.

PROCEDURE

WHO CAN BE PROPOSED BY WHOM?

Please read carefully the Statutes, an extract is available below and on the Cumulus website; www.cumulusassociation.org.  There shall be no more than one member from any country, excluding the nationality of the President.  Any Full member partner institution in Cumulus is asked to propose a Board Member or the President in formal writing.

Executive Board

The Board member shall be present or former Rectors, Heads, Directors, Professors or Deans.

Presidency

Any Full member institution can propose a person for Presidency. The President shall be a present or former Rector, Dean, Head or Director, or a Full Professor of a Member Institution.  There are no restrictions to the nationality of the President.

ELECTION

The elections will be carried out by the authorized representatives of the Full Members in the General Assembly in June 2013 in Kalmar Sweden.
